To Explore The Quan Deyu’s Prose Theory And Prose Practice

Quan Deyu, politician and writers in Dezong and Xianzong period in the middle Tang Dynasty. In Zhenyuan and Yuanhe years, Tang is in a period of transition in social ideology, politics, economy and culture. Quan Deyu devoted himself to the "ancient literature movement", reforming the imperial competitive examinations, exhorting and promoting newcomers and electing and training a large number of political and cultural elite for the government. For his political position and literary fame, he promoted the development of the "ancient literature movement", and had a great impact on the prose creation in the middle and late Tang Dynasty, which played an important role of inheriting the past and ushering in the future in the history of the Tang Dynasty literature. However, his prose theory and practice had not been paid enough attention by the later generation for so long time, and not been collated and studied systematically. Therefore, the thesis attempts to summarize his prose theory, sort out and explain the relationship between his prose theory and prose practice, in order to objectively show Quan Deyu’s achievements in prose.This thesis is intended to include three parts:Quan Deyu’s prose theory, Quan Deyu’s prose content and emotional characteristics, and Quan Deyu’s prose art and prose achievement.In his prose theory, Quan promoted "ecstatic study of the essence","words implicating the truth," and in-depth analyzes the relationship between writings and the truth; at same time, he also advocated "expression of emotions and resentment through the description of the objects "and emphasized the social function of the writings; in addition, Quan Deyu had some unique insights into the problem about "qi" and "li","jian" and "tong" and so on.Quan Deyu’s prose faithfully practiced his own theory, and his theory was consistent with his actual creation. From the content and purpose of the emotional characteristics, he always wrote about the hardship of the people, the worries about frontier peace, the obedience of the rules and laws, or consideration of selecting the virtuous and promoting the able. His prose not only involved the ancient and the present, but also included many trivial matters Meanwhile, his prose on beautiful views which are read by famous officials and closed friends contains broad and deep insights and understanding, finally practices his advocation "expression of emotions and resentment through the description of the objects". Besides, his writings made impressive achievements in art as well, which are mainly manifested in the following aspects:(1) involving both the ancient and the present, selecting upright and righteous material;(2) all writings including emotions and expressing it to an appropriate extent;(3) fully quoting and proving, abundant and succinct;(4) less parallel and more free sentences, interpromoting between narration and argument.
