A Project Report On News Translation Of Chinese Ministry Of Foreign Affairs

With the constant promotion of our comprehensive national power, the rise of our status and influence on the world stage, China has attracted ever-increasing attention in international diplomatic activities. However, some western countries still have misunderstandings or even prejudice against China. The phenomenon of providing one-sided and negative report about China still exists. Thus, it is an arduous and challenging task to clarify China’s foreign policies and diplomatic stance to the rest of the world comprehensively and objectively. An unqualified or incorrect translation cannot achieve our goal of carrying out external publicity. Instead, it will influence our national image directly and may cause profound and irreplaceable negative influence. However, the political publicity translation studies obviously lay behind and cannot meet the requirement of social development.News translation of Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs is served as the study object of this report. As the theoretical guidance of this translation report, the communicative translation theory proves that translation is a process of information transmission. Thus, the author puts forward that the translating process should be target-audience-centered and the target audiences’ acceptability should be put in the first place. After a deep analysis of the major issues and difficulties encountered during the translating process of this report, the author takes proper methods including literal and free translation, annotation, addition, conversion and reconstruction, etc. to resolve these difficulties, namely Chinese-featured words, special Chinese sentence style and vagueness in diplomatic language. Hopefully, this report can provide some suggestions and solutions for the translation of diplomatic news and author’s ability could be improved during this translation practice.
