The C-E Translation Of Vagueness In Diplomatic Language From The Perspective Of Scopos Theory

Diplomatic language has been playing an increasingly significant role in the diplomatic stages. In diplomatic activities, diplomatists often deliberately employ the vague language to maintain friendly relationship and avoid conflicts with other countries. As the inherent nature of natural language, vagueness has drawn much attention in the academic field from various aspects. However, few have made further study on how vagueness should be appropriately translated. Moreover, the translation quality determines the diplomatic relations. Under this circumstance, the translation of vagueness in diplomatic language becomes particularly important. In the thesis, the author focuses on the vagueness in the website of MFA from March to October 2015, applies the functionalist scopos theory and corpus analysis to the subject with a view to finding appropriate translation principles and methods in resolving the vagueness in diplomatic language. In light of the scopos theory, the study has shown that the translation of vagueness in diplomatic language should follow the principles of “vagueness to vagueness” and “vagueness to conciseness” at macro level, and adopt the methods of literal translation, supplement, simplification and adjustment in detail.From the point of view of vague language in the website of MFA, this thesis proposes the translation principles and methods under the guidance of scopos theory, which can provide the reference for the translators to deal with such problems.
