On Chinese-english Consecutive Interpreting Of The Vague Term Of "Keyi" In Chinese Top Leaders’ Diplomatic Language

The application of vagueness is extensively wide in Chinese diplomatic language.However, in the previous studies, the vague term “Keyi” has not been studied by manyscholars. In this paper,“Keyi” is taken as the research subject based on the InterpretiveTheory of Translation and the triangular model of interpretive translation.47pieces oforiginal scripts and their respective consecutive interpreting scripts, which are addressedin political discourses by Chinese top leaders in different international occasions in recentyears, are collected to construct a small corpus. The different categories of the functions of“Keyi” are presented, different interpretations are provided and the differentinterpretations in C-E interpreting are compared under different contexts.According to the Paris school, the translation of langue and parole levels belongs totranduction linguistique or transcodage, and only the translation of discourse level isfavored. Interpreters should not just translate for the correspondence of words, butequivalence of meaning as well.In this paper, the author has found out three conclusions: First, though “Keyi” has sixfunctions according to the semantic study, only three functions of the vague term “Keyi”are frequently used in diplomatic language, among which the function of representingability ranks first in frequency. The function of representing suggestion is equal to thefunction of representing possibility. Second, the interpretations of “Keyi” are quite variedwith different functions. Different interpretations have been applied by differentinterpreters, such as “can”,“will”,“may”,“should”,“would”,“enable”,“be capable of”,etc. Last, for the better convey of the message, the function of the interpretation of vagueterms could change with the accordance of context and adaptation of limited time.The present study can provide some enlightenments for the interpreting of the vagueterm “Keyi” as well as for other vague terms in Chinese into other languages.
