This thesis involves taking my orchestral work MIST as the example, to discuss compositional techniques of contemporary music. For example, serial analysis, schema induction, and characteristics of orchestrational texture structures are all included. It also analyzes timbre, acoustics, rhythm, and the development of composition materials. This thesis is divided intro three chapters:Chapter one is about the use of the twelve serial pitches in this work, which include the textural structures of the pitches along with the atonality of pentatonicism. Serial pitches have four forms: original, retrograde, reflection and retrograde of reflection, and can be matched in four forms including parallel, annexation, interweave and incursion. These are combined with examples in analyzing in my work.In the composition of contemporary music, musical form may influence rhythm, one of the most important musical elements. Chapter two is about how rhythm and the beat are used in elaboration, including the elements of incrementation, diversification, opposition and unity.Chapter three relates to timbre and the structure of texture that is built on acoustics. My analysis involves the way in which acoustics influence movement in this work, and how changes of density and range in the orchestration texture connects and transitions between the different hues. Through colored changes of acoustics, I have attempted to sketch out and describe the orchestration in a way consistent with my pursuit of timbre development and the expansion of texture.
