A Report On The Translation Of By Bread Atone:Signs Of Violence In The Mid-nineteenth Century

This paper is a report on the translation of By Bread Alone:Signs of Violence in the Mid-nineteenth Century. The original text is taken from the tenth chapter of The Location of Culture, the first collection essays of Homi K. Bhabha, one of the representative figures of postcolonial theory study. The Location of Culture, including Bhabha’s important papers from1980to1993, gives a very comprehensive and systematical discussion about the critical thought in postcolonial theory, characterized by the issues of identity and ethnic minority. This book provides a new and broad space of discussion for scholars of postcolonial theory and postcolonial criticism. The tenth chapter mainly studies the agency problem of the important events in the history, which is the issue of "signs of violence" in the Indian mutiny in the mid-nineteenth century.There are four aspects mainly included in this translation project report. First, this report’s author gives a brief introduction to the translation text, the author and the analysis of the original text. Second, the report’s author takes postcolonial translation theory as theoretical basis and gives this theory a detailed introduction. Third, the translation process is discussed, which mainly includes the difficulties that were encountered in the translation process and the methods of handling with them. Finally, the report’s author summarizes the experience and lessons in the translation and the problems to be solved, and the author hopes that all of these could give some references in the following translation.
