On The Translation Of Non-literary Texts From The Perspective Of Translation Shifts

This thesis is a practice-based research. The original text is Chapter8from ConfidenceMen: Wall Street, Washington and the Education of a President, the latest work of RonSuskind, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and The New York Times best-selling author. This booktells a story that follows the journey of Barack Obama, who rose as the country fell, offers thefirst full portrait of his tumultuous presidency, and reveals how he remanufactured confidencefor America step by step.The means of shift has always been one of the most basic devices in translation practice.The concept of “shift” is first put forward by Catford. This thesis aims to analyze thetranslation examples collected and arranged during translation by Catford’s shift theory anddescribe them from linguistic angle. However, shifts are not only confined to the syntacticstructure, but also could be extended to textual and cultural levels. This thesis tends to make itup by analyzing shifts on textual level with the aid of Halliday and Hasan’s theory ofcohesion.Through translation and study, this thesis concludes that words, phrases, clauses,sentences and paragraphs, texts are all indispensable parts of translation, so the text can beunderstood more thoroughly.
