The article studies the impact of SMS on the modern society from the perspective of Ethnology. As a carrier of the communications industry, cell phone has developed from simple communication tools to life essential belongings. Technology innovation drives the growth of mobile phone users whichstimulates the rapid development in the field of communication. At the same time, cell phone has become a platform that contains various functions, such as entertainment and culture. SMS is one of the important featuresthatis widely acknowledged by users. SMS users doubled since cell phone has spread in2000to various social classes, and eventually everyone’s life by providing people with a convenient and efficient way to communicate. Gradually, SMS has become a habit, a new form of culture. Meanwhile, this new form creatively reflects the pith of the profound Chinese language, the contemporary cultural psychology, and socialization. In this context, SMS became a new social feature. It can be classified into different categories based on its contents such as blessing, oral communications, emotional expression, philosophy, humor, commercial advertising category and so on. Furthermore, SMS as a culturemust contain cultural values and characteristics of its existence. For example, it can express emotions of people’s social life. SMS has the characteristics of wide spreading and free with creation and spreading methods. This is all because SMS as a particular medium. People seek to release tension caused by Fast-paced life through text messages. From all perspectives, SMS expresses social lives and people’s emotion.As media channels, SMS has a lot of positive impacts on society. However, things always have two sides. While the messages bring conveniences to people, it also hidesnegative effects, such as spam, scam SMS, the abuse of blessing messages, weakening interpersonal relation, reducing the depth of communication and so on.Based on the study of cell phone text messages and finishing process, this article applies ethnology as support and combines it with the current culture to think about the SMS culture throughchinese culture, its impact and its management. The article also analyzes SMS through its development and our unique culture features. All in all, the purpose of the writer is to provide ideas and solutions to the negative effects of SMS based on the knowledge and study of the customs and the characteristics of SMS.
