As China‘s economy has flourished and intercultural communication has deepened,especially the network has developed rapidly, Chinese people have more access toAmerican TV series nowadays. Now it is not only an entertainment in daily life but also amedium to convey culture. It needs the hard work of translators‘to translate TV series,and the first thing they need to work out is the title. To make a comprehensive view in thefield, it is easy to discover that these translated versions although are not introduced byofficial channels, but they have a high popularity on the Internet.In order to find the reason of high popularity of existing translated version, what‘smore, guide American TV series title translation in the future, this thesis takes EmmyAward Nomination American TV Series as the research object, collectes their titles andtranslated version and studies American TV series titles and their translation effect, byusing classification method and comparative analysis.Proceeding from naming approaches,the features and functions of American TVseries title, this thesis analyzes the cultural differences reflected in American and ChineseTV series, proposes main translation methods in American TV series title translation andputs forward the principles guiding American TV series title translation. To translatingAmerican TV series titles, two aspects should be considered: invariant factor and variantfactor. The invariant factors embodies in the same cultural image, while the variant factorembodies in the differences of culture and aesthetic standard and seeking of commercialbenefit.Chapter One is an introduction to the motivation, objective, significance,methodology and data collecting of the research. Chapter Two is a brief introduction ofAmerican TV series and Emmy Award, what‘s more previous study on title translation isalso discussed here. Chapter Three studies on the research target. Three aspects areanalyzed: naming methods, features and functions of TV Series titles. Chapter Four is thehighlighted body of the thesis. First the author describes some translation strategiesaccording the analysis of the collections. Second, abundant examples are given and analyzed in this part and suggestions are put forward for four aspects of TV series titletranslation. In the Fifth chapter, after the detailed analysis, two aspects should beconsidered: constant factor and variable factor. The constant factors embodies in the samecultural image, while the variable factor embodies in the differences of culture andaesthetic standard and seeking of commercial benefit. Chapter Six is the conclusion part. Asummary of the study is given in this part. Implications of the project and suggestions forfurther research are also included in this chapter.
