Chinese medicine has profound meanings and long history. To introducetraditional Chinese medicine and Chinese culture to other countries, its Englishtranslation is important and meaningful. This practice report, takes the Englishtranslation of An Illustrated Introduction to Chinese Culture--Traditional ChineseMedicine as an example, puts forward the method of translation compensation tosolve the problems met in the translation process.An Illustrated Introduction to Chinese Culture--Traditional Chinese Medicineintroduces traditional Chinese medicine as a kind of culture and it is as easyunderstood science book on traditional Chinese medicine. This book talks about theoverall situation of traditional Chinese medicine though stories including manyhistorical allusions and anecdotes.As a part of the Chinese culture, traditional Chinese medicine contains manywords with distinct cultural characteristics or we can say the words with Chinesecharacteristics. For example, the most difficult part for translation---the traditionalChinese medicine terminology.Some culture items about traditional Chinese medicine couldn’t be translatedinto English directly during the translation of the book because of the differencesbetween these two languages and culture background. The problems I met during thisprocess are as follows: first, translation on words with Chinese characteristics; second,terms; third, the complex structure of sentences. These three problems show theabsence on culture, meanings and grammar.
