As living standards have been improved, public awareness of the importance of scientific literacy has also grown.More and more people enjoy reading popular science books, many of which are introduced from abroad. But even as the demand for popular science books increases, the academic research on their translation remains inadequate. It is generally believed that scientificity is the most important feature of popular science books, and the function of such books is to transfer scientific knowledge to the public.Accordingly, their translations should meet the principles of accuracy and accessibility. However,in actual translation practices, the author of this report has found that some popular science books also provide readers with suggestions. Thus, such suggestions should also be effectively reproduced in the target texts. From May to August in 2017,the author completed the translation of two popular science books:one on autism and one on diabetes. These books take up two equally important tasks:(1)transmitting medical knowledge and(2)calling upon readers to make changes in their lives. In the framework of Peter Newmark's translation theory, these books can be considered as a kind of text which has both the informative and vocative functions, and communicative translation is their appropriate translation strategy. The reader is the major concern in the process of translating, and the target text should meet the needs of the target reader. Therefore,to realize the informative and vocative functions in the target text, the author has highlighted the corresponding key features in the translation process:first, medical information should be accurate;second, sentences should be logical;third, suggestions should be direct;fourth, the tone of such suggestions should be amiable. And the author also adopted some translation techniques including creative translation, using Chinese set phrases, sentence structure reorganization, annotation and omission in the translation process.
