Compound words in modern Chinese are composed of two or more morphemes.Morphemes as the basic structural unit of compound words are not composedoptionally when they constitute word forms, but there is a logical mechanism whichis selected based on the semantic structure of the compound words. There are manyresearches about the meaning of morphemes of modern Chinese compound words,but analyzing the meaning of morphemes of compound words from the perspective ofcategory hasn’t gotten enough attention of the researchers.This paper analyze the meaning of morphemes of modern Chinese compoundwords based on Aristotle’s classical category theory, and provide advices for theteaching of morphemes of compound words, hoping to assist students with theirstudies and teachers with their teaching.This paper consists of ten chapters. Chapter one is introduction, to introduce thebackground of this paper, research methods, situation of the research of meaning ofmorphemes of compound words and the definition of the research object and scope.Chapter Two is to analyze the value of the Aristotle’s category theory. Aristotle’sanalysis and interpretation about the category theory using the language as a foothold.Therefore, it not only laid the foundation of logic areas, but also provided a principlefor the study of the meaning of morphemes. Chapter Three is based on the “Rankoutline of Chinese vocabulary” and Chinese language teaching, illustrate theimportance of category analysis of the meaning of morphemes of compound words.Chapter Four to Chapter Nine is to categorize the meaning of morphemes of sixtypes of compound words, including Subject-predicate type, verb-object type,adverbial-central word, attribute-central word, predicate-complement type and jointtype. The meaning of morphemes of compound words usually reflect the attributesignificance of an object, and have a specific logical relationship. This particularlogical relationship embodied in any one of the morphemes of the compound wordsbelong to a certain category of attribute, reflecting the expressive relationship between the meaning of morphemes and the structures of the meaning of words. Thus,in order to interpret morpheme meanings of the compound words, they mustdetermine the significant category of each morpheme, in order to interpret themeaning of a morpheme on a particular significant category. This part of the contentsdescribe in accordance with this thinking, analyze the meaning of morphemesaccording to the grammatical structure of compound words. Chapter Ten is theconclusion to discuss the outcomes and demerits of the study. The main body of thispaper is from Chapter Two to Chapter Nine.
