Wu Mengchuang, a well-known poet of the Southern Song Dynasty, had a greatinfluence in the history of Chinese poetry. He not only carried forward the tradition ofSong Poetry but also made further changes to the Song poetry after Xin Qiji, JiangKui, which made Song Poetry reach its third peak. In his existing340poems, thoseexpressing sentimental love take up a considerable proportion. They are the mostimportant part of the whole creation of the poets and also the most affectionate, themost charming and the most touching among all his poems.In this paper, by combining Mengchuang and two concubines’ the loveexperiences which were meandering and eventually ended in tragedy, the authorsubdivided the Romantic–love ci–poetry into four kinds: the Romantic–love ci–poetry which are in memory of people by describing the landscapes; the Romantic–love ci–poetry which express the emotion of missing people during every festival;love poems in which the poets think of people at the sight of related things; theRomantic–love ci–poetry in which the poets express concern because of reward.This paper deeply analyzed Mengchuang’sRomantic–love ci–poetry in detail inorder to fully grasp the ideological content of it, and deeply understood the emotionconnotation displayed in the works of poets.Then, this paper virtualized characters and events with the symbolic approach,represented complex emotion with the frequent cosmic synchronization and thecombination of people, things and landscapes and expressed genuine and sincerelove with real or imagined dream descriptions in order to explore its unique artisticcharm. Through the comparative analysis with other poets’ works, this paperelaborated how the Romantic–love ci–poetry drew lessons from the previous poetsin the way of cosmic synchronization, lyric, diction color and allusions so as todefinite succession of the Romantic–love ci–poetry. Finally, this paper confirmedthe status of this love poetry in the poetry history of China by analyzing and summingup the spread of this love poetry and its impact on future generations.
