The Tang-poetry is the outstanding art treasure of Chinese classical literature. The brilliantachievements on Tang-poetry have aroused later generations’ interest in learning and researching. Thepeople in Song Dynasty had made brilliant achievements in sorting and printing the Tang-poetry-text,collecting and compiling the Tang Dynasty-poets’ data, analysing theories and exploring the artistic skillsof the Tang-poetry, and have made outstanding contribution to sorting and studying the Tang-poetry. Thestudy of Tang-poetry-documents has already become mature in the Song Dynasty. In this paper, the authortries to review the development of the study of Tang-poetry-documents in the Song Dynasty, generalize thecharacteristics of the Tang-poetry-documents in the Song Dynasty, and summarize the influence of thestudy of Tang-poetry-documents in the Song Dynasty on later generations’ study of the Tang-poetry, andthen reveal the connecting meaning of the Tang-poetry-documents in the Song Dynasty on thedevelopment history of the study of Tang-poetry-documents. This paper includes the following contents:Introduction: The background of the study of Tang-poetry-documents in the Song Dynasty. Firstof all, exploring how the people in Song Dynasty have made the study of Tang-poetry-documents graduallymature during the process of studying the Tang-poetry and establishing the unique style of the Song-poetry.The people in Song Dynasty had theoretical consciousness, when they inherited the traditions of theTang-poetry, questioned “the Song-poetry” and underscored the characteristics of “the Tang-poetry”.They commented on the Tang-poetry form multiple perspectives. The people in Song Dynasty activelycompiled and sorted the Tang-poetry collections and anthologies, Tang-Dynasty-poets’ data, and hadmade great contribution to preserve the Tang-poetry-documents. Secondly, summarizing the influence ofthe study of Tang-poetry-documents in the Tang Dynasty on the study of Tang-poetry-documents in the Song Dynasty, which includes compiling the Tang-poetry collections,“Tang-people’s selection of theTang-poetry”, the criticism method and thought of comment to the Tang-poetry.Chapter one: The study of Tang-poetry-documents in the Northern Song Dynasty. The study ofTang-poetry-documents has initially taken shape in the Northern Song Dynasty. In this chapter, the authordescribes the overall appearance of the study of Tang-poetry-documents in the Northern Song Dynasty, andsummarizes the characteristics of the Tang-poetry-documents in the Northern Song Dynasty. Section1:How the people in Northern Song Dynasty sort Tang-poetry-text. There were a large number of theTang-poetry collections in the Northern Song Dynasty. The people in Northern Song Dynasty had triedtheir best to make the Tang-poetry collections more complete, and make innovation oneditorial stylistic rules and layout. Large scale collections, such as Wen Yvan Ying Hua, Tang Wen Cui, YveFu Shi Ji have clear purpose in preserving documents and include plenty of Tang-poetry. The work ofcompiling the Tang-poetry anthologies is in its infancy. Wang Anshi’s Tang Bai Jia Shi Xvan is therepresentative work. Section2: Collection of the Tang-Dynasty-poets’ data in the Northern Song Dynasty.There is plenty of Tang-Dynasty-poets’ data in the official history such as Xin Tang Shu. The chronicles ofTang-Dynasty-poets’ life which were compiled by the people in late Northern Song Dynasty indicate thatthe study of Tang-poetry-documents had developed to a higher level. Hong Xingzu’s Han Zi Nian Pu is therepresentative work. The literary sketches, reference books with material taken from various sources andarranged according to subjects, books about politics, books about Buddhism and Taoism in the NorthernSong Dynasty, such as Bei Meng Suo Yan, Nan Bu Xin Shu, Tang Yv Lin, Tang Hui Yao, Song Gao SengZhuan also include a large number of life stories and anecdotes of the Tang-Dynasty-poets. Section3: Thedata of comments on the Tang-poetry. The people in Song Dynasty had created a new poetry criticismform—notes on poets and poetry. In the notes on poets and poetry of the Northern Song Dynasty, Liu Yi Shi Hua, Hou Shan Shi Hua, Lin Han Yin Jv Shi Hua, Shi Lin Shi Hua have more comments on theTang-poetry. Literati also commented on the Tang-poetry in their literary sketches, prefaces and postscripts,letters, poems and proses. The focus of comments on the Tang-poetry by the people in Northern SongDynasty is comments on poetic style, appreciation of poetry, verification of words and literary quotation.The main objects of these comments are Du Fu, Li Bai and the poets in middle and late Tang Dynasty. Butthe logicality and the theory of these comments is comparatively unsubstantial.Chapter two: The study of Tang-poetry-documents in the Southern Song Dynasty. In the SouthernSong Dynasty, the study of Tang-poetry-documents had developed to a higher level and had graduallybecome mature. In this chapter, the author describes the overall appearance of the study ofTang-poetry-documents in the Southern Song Dynasty, and summarizes the characteristics of theTang-poetry-documents in the Southern Song Dynasty. Section1: How the people in Southern SongDynasty sort Tang-poetry-text. The focus of the Tang-poetry collections by the people in Southern SongDynasty is collating scripts, annotating, textual researching and chronicling. A climax of compiling theTang-poetry anthologies appeared in the Southern Song Dynasty. The representative works of theseanthologies are Wan Shou Tang Ren Jve Jv, Zhong Miao Ji, Tang Seng Hong Xiv Ji, Zhu Jie Zhang QvanJian Qvan Er Xian Sheng Xvan Tang Shi, Fen Men Zuan Lei Tang Ge Shi, Tang San Ti Shi and so on. Thescale of most of these anthologies is larger than the Tang-poetry anthologies in the Northern Song Dynasty.The editorial stylistic rules and layout of these anthologies is also trailblazing. The inclination to selectpoets and poems is selecting the poets in middle and late Tang Dynasty and modern style poetry. ManyTang-poetry anthologies in the Northern Song Dynasty have applicability, some anthologies reflect thepatriotic enthusiasm of the people in Northern Song Dynasty. Section2: Collection of theTang-Dynasty-poets’ data in the Southern Song Dynasty. Compiling the chronicles of Tang-Dynasty-poets’ life had become a common practice in the Southern Song Dynasty. The chronicles of Tang-Dynasty-poets’life showed a diversified trend. There are also some Tang-Dynasty-poet’s life data in the literary sketchesand reference books with material taken from various sources and arranged according to subjects. Section3:The data of comments on the Tang-poetry. In the Southern Song Dynasty, the number and the scale of thenotes on poets and poetry is larger. The theory of these notes on poets and poetry had become stronger. Therepresentative works are Sui Han Tang Shi Hua, Cang Lang Shi Hua, Hou Cun Shi Hua. In the SouthernSong Dynasty, the data of comments on the Tang-poetry which are in the literary sketches,prefaces and postscripts, letters, poems and proses are also very rich. The focus of comments on theTang-poetry is still the poets in middle and late Tang Dynasty. The systematicness and the theory of thesecomments had been stronger than the comments on the Northern Song Dynasty. In addition, the people inSouthern Song Dynasty had also made brilliant achievements in punctuating and annotating theTang-poetry, exploring the rules of poetry, compiling works that discussing the poetry rules. Section4:Discussing the high historical value of the Tang-poetry collections and anthologies in the Song Dynasty incompiling scattering Tang-poetry, collating scripts, textual researching and distinguishing true from false.Chapter three: Summarizing the influence of the study of Tang-poetry-documents in the SongDynasty on later generations’ study of the Tang-poetry. It’s the academic accumulation of the study ofTang-poetry-documents in the Song Dynasty that lays the foundation for the flourish of the study ofTang-poetry-documents in the Ming Dynasty, and its peak in the Qing Dynasty. The order way of theTang-poetry-documents, the criticism method, thought of comment and critical form for the Tang-poetryare relevant to the later generations’ collection and study of the Tang-poetry. Firstly, the Tang-poetrycollections compiled and printed by the people in Song Dynasty provide the later generations with basicdocuments which are beneficial to printing and annotating the Tang-poetry again. The later generations also inherit the naming patterns and the sorting methods of the Tang-poetry collections compiled by the peoplein Song Dynasty. Secondly, the collections of poems and proses include a large number of Tang-poetry,which lays the foundation for the later Tang-poetry collections. The selecting ranges and selecting criteriaof the Tang-poetry anthologies have influence on the later Tang-poetry anthologies. Thirdly, the literati inMing and Qing Dynasty attached great importance to compiling chronicles of Tang-Dynasty-poets’ life,which inherited and developed from the people in Song Dynasty. Fourthly, the literati in Song Dynastyput forward many poetics theories about the Tang-poetry in the notes on poets and poetry, and they also putforward many theses that have far-reaching impact. Fifthly, punctuating and annotating the Tang-poetry bythe people in Song Dynasty has significant influence on maturation of punctuating and annotating poetry inthe Ming Dynasty.
