This thesis studies Xu Xueyi’s comments on Du Fu’s poems. It discusses several representative questions related to the comments, tries to reveal the content and characteristics of the comments and explores its contribution and position in the history of the studies of Du Fu’s poems. The body of the thesis is divided into four parts.Chapter One discusses Xu Xueyi’s views on "the Norm and Change" of Du Fu’s poems. Xu Xueyi confirms Du Fu’s poems as the "Norm" as a whole. He carefully analyses the poetic characteristics of Du Fu’s poems and the prosaic characteristics of Yuan He poems to see that Du Fu’s poems are the "Norm". Xu Xueyi further analyses the "Change" of Du Fu’s poems. On Du Fu’s septasyllabic, he puts forward the opinion that the "Change" outweighs the "Norm", which represents that poetics is going to change from "the Norm and Change Theory" to "the Biantong Theory". He also discusses the Ge Xing’s characteristic of Du Fu’s septasyllabic and he conforms the value of these poems.Chapter Two discusses Xu Xueyi’s views on the similarities and differences between Du Fu’s poems and the poems in the Prosperous Tang Dynasty. Xu Xueyi mainly compares the similarities and differences between Du Fu’s regulated verses and the regulated verses in the Prosperous Tang Dynasty from the following aspects: composition characteristics, aesthetic realm, art origin and overall achievements. On pre-Tang poems, Xu Xueyi thinks that Du Fu’s achievements are greater than the poets of the Prosperous Tang Dynasty.Chapter Three studies Xu Xueyi’s views on the comparison between Li Bai and Du Fu. On composition characteristics, he uses "Interest" and "Talent" for Li Bai’s poems, "Sense" and "Author" for Du Fu’s poems. On work style, he uses "bold" and "steady" respectively for the poems of Li Bai and Du Fu. On art origin, he thinks that Li Bai epitomized the ancient poetry, while Du Fu’s poems have the characteristic of "Creation".Chapter Four discusses Xu Xueyi’s views on the relationship between Du Fu’s poems and the poems in the Song Dynasties. He confirms the poems in the Song Dynasties as the "Change". And yet, he affirms their values to some extent. He emphasizes that the "Change" in Du Fu’s poems opened the poems in the Song Dynasties. He thinks that the poets in the Song Dynasties failed to learn from Du Fu’s poems. He further puts forward the opinion that the poets in the Song Dynasties aimed to learn from the flaw of Du Fu’s poems.
