With the coming of consumption era, art has already stepped down, into the mass culture. In the1960s, Pop art had created a unique Pop art language, and demonstrated the influence of mass culture andmedia to art. The new pop art that Yoshitomo Nara represented continued the popularizationand fashionisation, the features of the landmark of Pop art of1960’s. Meanwhile, he also integrated Japan’sunique culture, public art features and world fusion new movement in art. He creatively extended the formand enriched the connotation of Pop art. His works tastes and possesses art and possess at the same time.They not only in Japan have been affirmed, but also among the international art market and the mass mediahave achieved good results. This article, under the background of consumption era, through the analysisand discussion of the various art forms of Nara popularized and spiritual connotation, is trying to bring us anew direction by finding the context of contemporary art from Japan and the current development ofChinese contemporary art so that we could have deeper and three-dimensional understanding ofthe connotation of popularization. This article is divided into four parts:The first part discussed the objective factor of the popularization of Yoshitomo Nara Pop Art andproved that the popularization of art is an inevitable result of historical development in the background ofconsumption era. With the expansion of consumer culture, economy and culture Cross-border effectshappened around the world, the gap between the world of mass culture gradually reduced while thepreference of mass culture trends to be the same and then Yoshitomo Nara Pop Art has been generallyrecognized. Meanwhile, public aesthetic and art have a two-way influence, not only art leads the public’saesthetic orientation, but also mass culture reverse the subtle influence of artists. The art market plays a rolein fueling popularization of art. The artists care about consumers’ reaction. If a artwork contains somefactors of popularization that get praise from consumers, they will enhance the factors in their artworks inorder to get better performance in market.The second part focused on the popularization of Yoshitomo Nara’s art practice. Symbolic cartoonimage is the direct expression of popularization. His artistic means didn’t limit to traditional sculpture andpainting, also included Illustrations, household goods and merchandise design etc. Yoshitomo Nara’s objective and fields of cross-border cooperation are coinciding with mass culture and this is also a proof forhis popularized art. A successful commercial promotion that makes him idol image with affinity affects theposition of his art indirectly.The third part mainly analyzed Yoshitomo Nara Art spiritual connotation Popularization. His artpresents the new pop art spirit. The popularization is one of the important characteristic of pop art. Thepopularization is more moderate and exquisite when compared with Takashi Murakami who is also a greatpop artist of Japanese. Yoshitomo Nara’s Japanese works of local cultural integrated with the new spirit ofexpressionism. He borrowed the Japanese anime shell form; filled in the Japanese “mono no aware” andexpressionism created artwork perfectly balanced between mass culture and high art. His artwork facing theweak side of adult society cures people’s mind. This humanistic care spirit is one reason of why his art canbe accepted by normal people.The fourth part discussed the influence and enlightenment of Yoshitomo Nara’s work to Chinesecontemporary art. The two countries have a similar path of art development. Comparing to Chinesecontradictory attitude to the western art, Japanese have a deeper and thorough study of the western worldand gradually formed a special style that differ from western art and gained a certain art position in theworld. A comprehensive analysis would enlighten us forming a new perspective of contemporary art spiritand society, and establish our own style of art.
