In an era of international communication and information globalization, news translationis playing an increasingly important role and has already aroused the scholars’ attention. Lotsof scholars from both at home and abroad have delved into the field of news translation fromvarious perspectives. However, few of them have done researches on paratextual elements innews translation. This thesis taps into news translation from the perspective of paratext whichwell explains the translation practice and can broaden and deepen news translation study.News translation is not only a linguistic transfer, but also a cultural exchange. It involvessuch elements as politics, national interest, ideology, reader’s horizon of expectations, etc.Paratext, a concept first put forward by a French literary theorist Gérard Genette, refers to theaccompanying productions surrounding and extending the text such as the title, the preface, the illustration, and the cover and so on. In recent years, paratext has been applied totranslation studies by many scholars and it has been expanded to refer to the immaterialparatextual elements in translation like ideology, power relations, reader’s horizon ofexpectations, social and cultural elements, etc. Thus it can be seen that paratext can providean appropriate perspective for the study of news translation. Therefore, the author of thisthesis attempts to explore the paratextual elements in news translation and how these elementsinfluence the translations with a case study of Reference News translation. On the basis of Professor Zhang Meifang’s classification of paratextual elements andthrough case analysis, the author holds that there are three main paratextual elements in newstranslation: the reader’s horizon of expectations, ideology and national emotion, and bilateralrelationship and national interest. These paratextual elements are immaterial, but they exertgreat influence on the translation practices. This influence is reflected from three main aspects:the selection of source news, the selection of translation methods, and the selection oflanguage form, all of which are significant steps in the process of translation. Only if thetranslator takes into account those paratextual elements can he or she produce appropriatetranslation productions. This research is of great significance in the sense that it applies the new findings ofparatextual elements in translation to the study of news translation, and highlights that theparatextual elements exert great influence on news translation practice mainly in three aspects. This preliminary research will give some suggestions for further study.
