Research On Carved Lacquerware In Song Yuan And Ming Dynasties

Lacquer was first discovered in the Kuahuqiao site during the Neolithic period. Starting in Tang Dynasty, carved lacquer appeared when lacquer developed into a relatively mature period. However, the existing carved lacquer entities from Tang Dynasty are rare. Then during Song and Yuan Dynasty, carved lacquer entered into a new climax with wide varieties, many eminent scholars and high technological level. In Ming Dynasty, carved lacquer entered into a prosperous period due to preference from rulers. The thesis classifies the carved lacquer of Song, Yuan and Ming Dynasty and discusses the problems concerned by use of typological method in archeology through collecting large quantities of unearthed utensils and handed down lacquers.The first part of this paper is introduction where the cause and meaning of the selected topic are stated. This part combs the brief history of research of lacquer, clears and definite the lacquer conception, study method and frame structure.The second, third and fourth parts mainly contrast the internal characteristics of utensils from characteristics of lacquer type, copper mold making process, painted decoration process, decoration and inscription by using chart for the unearthed lacquer data and handed down lacquer data. Analysis combined with social background has been conducted, which is the focus of the thesis. The thesis mainly classifies the pattern and styles if the carved lacquer of Song, Yuan and Ming Dynasties with typological method to find standard lacquer in every period (Due to different style of lacquer during period of each emperor in Ming Dynasty, the pattern and styles shall be specific to every period of all emperors from Hongwu to Xuande to find standard lacquer in every period). The fifth part discusses relevant problems, analyses the inherent relationship of carved lacquer from Song, Yuan to Ming Dynasty and causes of rising and declining and further summarizes the enlightenment on modern lacquer technology.The thesis mainly discovers the inherent relationship of Song, Yuan and Ming Dynasty and obtains enlightenment on modern lacquer technology by combing the carved lacquer of Song, Yuan and Ming Dynasties.
