A Grammar of the Chinese Colloquial Language Commonly Called the MandarinDialect is one of the important works of British missionary Joseph Edkins’, talkingabout mandarin dialect. This book is a valuable material recording Peking dialect in themid-19th century. Using the speech parts of the A Grammar of the Chinese ColloquialLanguage Commonly Called the Mandarin Dialect as an object of study, the author hastranslated these parts into Chinese and summarized the detailed explanation of JosephEdkins’ about these parts.The author has also studied the features of the speech ofPeking dialect in the mid-19th century recorded on this book by taking the method ofliterature research, textual research and comparative analysis, discussed Joseph Edkins’ideas about the classification of speech parts and given objective evaluation on theseviewpoints.This paper can be divided into four parts.The first part gives an introduction to the life of Joseph Edkins, his main works andthe brief list of the content of A Grammar of the Chinese Colloquial LanguageCommonly Called the Mandarin Dialect.In second part, this paper studies and researches the speech parts of A Grammar ofthe Chinese Colloquial Language Commonly Called the Mandarin Dialect, from theaspects of the evolution of the word, classification of speech parts, details of all kindsof words and morphology,introduces each style of the book.The third part evaluates objectively the viewpoints of JE’ about the speech parts of AGrammar of the Chinese Colloquial Language Commonly Called the MandarinDialect.The fourth part contains the appendix, the translation of the speech parts, which willhelp for the study and research on this book.To sum up, A Grammar of the Chinese Colloquial Language Commonly Called theMandarin Dialect serves as an invaluable material recording the oral of Peking dialectmore than100years ago.It classifies the parts of speech exactly, provides valuablematerial and helpful experience to mandarin dialect by the westerners.
