Chick flick was born in the mid-1990s as a new sub-genre in the international film field, such as Sex and the City, Bridget Jones’s Diary, Legally Blonde and so on. Chick flick began in America and Britain, and now it is becoming more and more popular around the world, even in China. Of course, America is the best one during all; the countries that make chick flicks. By virtue of a strong film production team, a shiny Hollywood star factory, a set of skilled film narrative techniques and a large-scale marketing, American has become the leader in making chick flicks. As one of the practical forms of film text of postfeminism in consumption age, chick flick has its special background. Always adapted from chick lit, chick flick is the product of today’s consumer society, consumer culture and postfeminism, showing modern city women’s desire for self-consciousness, love, career and fashion. Prosperous consumer culture and postfeminism have provided favorable conditions for American chick flick. This paper is the result of a deep research into American chick flick from the consumer and postfeminism perspective. The purpose is to find out the way to express modern city women’s desire, to show their femininity and to depict sisterhood with feminine narrative, dramatic expression and fashion packaging. There is no doubt that American chick flick has potential problems owing to its ambiguous discourse. We should be aware of the danger of over consumption of female body when promoting its charm. We should also try to avoid falling into the sweet temptations among consumer society, try to go out of the wrong region of gender Utopia. In spite of this, American chick flick is still the leader in the world. This research on the mature American chick flick model system can provide some useful reference for the future development of the domestic chick flick, promoting the localization development of this sub-genre in China.
