Diversified cultures are created and developed by human beings andthey always impose on psychological state and behaviors of people underdifferent social forms. Due to the characteristics of subjective initiatives, people are bound to go through psychological adjustment and try to learnand employ the second elements when they step onto a new culture fromtheir original one. In other words, the process of cultural adjustment isregarded as acculturation. Additionally, whether in ancient or moderntimes, problems caused by maladjustment are common and realistic allover the world, so the research on the topic the author chooses is verynecessary to explore for overseas Chinese.Film is generally considered as an art form which reflects specificcultures and expresses feelings and ideas by means of creating the audioand visual effects. The cultural information that film covers is veryabundant and unique. So it is a kind of vivid and straightforward materialfor people to discover and explore different cultures. In the thesis, contrastive analysis is adopted as the main research method. Through acontrastive cultural analysis on Ang Lee’s two typical films, PushingHands and The Wedding Banquet, the author will try to exploredifferences between the old generation and the new generation, betweeneastern culture and western culture. From the two movies, it can beobserved that characters take a tolerant attitude to deal with culturalconflicts in their daily life. And then author makes further exploration toacculturation strategies to cope with cultural conflicts.Under the new global situation of increasing demand of cross-cultural communication, the thesis aims to explore the acculturationstrategies to better integrate into a new culture for Chinese expatriates onthe basis of Berry’s two-dimensional acculturation model. The researchquestions are as follows:(1) What aspects do main cultural conflictsreflect in between western countries and China?(2) What are theunderlying reasons for the phenomenon of cultural conflicts between thewest and the east?(3) How does overseas Chinese effectively improvethe problems caused by cultural maladjustment in a new culture? The result of the research is that integration strategy is the mostpreferred acculturation strategy that overseas Chinese will adopt when areconfronted with different cultures after a detailed analysis onacculturation strategies. Thus, the study on acculturation strategiespresents a practical significance and some specified measures are putforward in the thesis to help overseas Chinese successfully acculturate inthe foreign countries.
