With more and more excellent foreign films and television programs pouring intoChina,subtitle translation is attracting more and more people’s attention. People’srequirements to the subtitle translation also become increasingly high, because thequality of the films and TV programs will directly influence the targetaudiences’understanding and the degree of acceptance. Recently, subtitle translation hasachieved some research achievements theoretically and practically. However, thecomparative study on different versions of the same work is relatively immitted. Andthe research into the subtitle translation needs further studies.As a purposeful activity,the ultimate object of subtitle translation is to facilitate theaudiences overcome the language and culture barriers to better enjoy the foreignprograms. The accuracy and professional of the subtitle translation appears to be moreimportant. Due to the distinctiveness and limitations some related principles andstrategies need to be adopted, and then chose the best translating methods. In that waycan the translators improve their professional translation levels.This thesis will study the two versions of the popular American sitcom The BigBang Theory from the perspective of Skopos. Mainly the author will discuss someprinciples and strategies used in the subtitle translation, and through the comparison tofind out the advantages and disadvantages of the two versions. At the end of the thesisthe author will focus on some inaccuracy and controversial problems, and put forwardthe proper solutions. It has both theoretical meaning as well as practical meanings.
