As globalization speeds up, the collision and fusion of cultures between countries hasbecome more apparent. Films promote cross-cultural communication. Because of languagebarriers and differences in cultural background, subtitle translation is particularly important.Most viewers rely on subtitles to understand the story and feel the exotic culture and customs.Subtitle translation is a kind of cross-cultural communication. Viewers need professionaland standardized subtitle translation, which can use appropriate language, reproduced theideas and artistry of the film and this is the biggest challenge for the subtitle translators.However, due to various reasons, at this stage, our research for subtitle translation is far fromreaching the level of literary translation; we are not paying enough attention to the spottyquality of the subtitle translation. So how to find breakthrough point to improve the quality ofthe subtitle translation becomes the focus of this paper.The Skopostheorie says translation is determined by the purpose. The main purpose ofthe subtitle translation is to provide, within the constraints of time and space, a well-translatedsubtitle, which can lead the audience cross the barriers of language and culture, thenunderstand the whole story.This report is a translation summary of the film named Bill Cunningham New, whichcombined subtitle features and the skoposteorie, discussed the translation strategies and skills,and how to convey the film’s content and information to the target language audiencesefficiently under the constraints of time.
