Project Report On Translation Of The Football Men

This translation report concerns an English-Chinese translation project on the book The Football Men, written by a household-renowned sport columnist Simon Kuper, the source text is a book named The Football Men (ISBN978-0-85720-160-7) with210,000wordcount source text in total where50,000has been translated by the translator of this paper and10,000wordcount was selected as part of the project report. The Chinese version has been published by Lijiang Publishing House on January,2013. This project report chooses the functionalism in the translation studies as the theoretical foundation, which is originated from the linguistic functionalism. It mainly discusses the translation brief and cultureme in terms of functionalism in E-C translation activities and provides corresponding translation strategies and solutions to the specific problems.This report takes functionalism in consulting the translation field practice and culturemes as the prime theoretical discussion to explore cultureme. It tries to figure out the possible techniques that can be wielded in the translation process.Through reading the reference and analysing, the translator found that:1. translation brief is effective to the pre-translation. It simplifies the task analysis especially for the student translators. Student translators, as a result, can identify the textual and non-textual factors in the translation task.2. Translation tools are essential for the translators. Translators need to have dictionaries, online search engines and even ask for friends for help to assist them to acquire materials.3. Translation techniques put forward by the functionalism of the translation studies can be implemented in translating the culturemes. The selection of specific techniques can be quite flexible in specific texts.4. More empirical studies on the culturemes are on the call for they can be taken as part of translation units.Due to the fact that few studies have been conducted on the culturemes, this study is a trial and hopefully it can be instructive to translation teaching, research and practice.
