The dragon patterns in Tibetan painting proved cultural and artistic exchange andfusion between different ethnic groups in China,as a multi-ethnic country. Alsoproved the indigenous Tibetan religion and Buddhism. The dragon patterns was like asymbol in Tibetan culture, which spread in snow-covered plateau between themountains and lakes. It’s maintained the livelihood of Tibetan people in thissnow-covered plateau and regard as a symbol of power and wealth. It’s image notonly comes from the spirit of the snow-covered plateau but also full of the Tibetanpeople ’s admiration and love for nature.The first section of the article analyses the origin and formation of Tibetandragons through the natural and historical context of their formations. Based on threekinds of doctrines studied by our forefathers, as well as the investigation and analysesof historical data conducted on the history of Tibetan dragon worship, it is concludedthat the Tibetan dragon worship originated from nature worship, and the concept ofdragon had formed in the stage of Bon. Meanwhile, it also summarizes Tibetandragons’ images and the four stages which the connotation development experienced.From the perspective of image research, the article conducts analysis on early-stageliterature descriptions, frescoes and image information of tombs to reproduce theTibetan dragons’ images of early stage. It also sorts out the origin, occurrence anddevelopment of the Tibetan dragons’ images; it also summarizes the modelingcharacteristics of dragons affected by various cultures in different stages.The second section of this article conducts analyses from two perspectives—thespecies and aesthetic characteristics of dragons in Tibetan paintings, classifies thedragons’ species, systematizes the evolution and development of dragons’ images andanalyses the reasons why dragons’ images have changed. Based on the divisions ofdragons’ species and images, the article applies iconography research method, and combines hand painting materials, frescoes, Thangka and folk paintings, so as toanalyze the various art characteristics and aesthetic feelings contained in all kinds ofdragons with different images; it also carries out an aesthetic interpretation on theimages of dragons in Tibetan paintings, in aspects of modeling, colors and the like.The third section of the article analyzes the aesthetic images and symbolicmeanings of the dragons in Tibetan paintings, and explores the aesthetic valuescontained in the images of dragons in the paintings. It illustrates the artistic andhistorical values, as well as connotations in the culture and religious belief, which areall contained in the dragons’ images, analyzes the reasons that have caused the Tibetannationality’s worship and preference towards the images of dragons in aestheticpsychology and summarizes the aesthetic values delivered by the dragons’ images inTibetan paintings.
