With the rapid development of modern economy and science and technology, the communication in this field between China and the west is frequent, English for science and technology(EST) has developed into a significant way of communication. With the drastic development of science and technology，EST translation has become an integral part of exchanges in science and technology, meanwhile, it plays a more important role in daily life. Therefore it is quite necessary to make a deep and systematic analysis and research into EST.The translation task is This Explains Everything, written by John Brockman. It presents150of the most surprising and brilliant theories of the way our minds, societies, and universe work. This translation practice report is based on author’s translation task, including the part I of this book. This report consists of the text analysis, the process description, the case analysis and the conclusion. It covers a detailed introduction of translation process, preparation and post-translation issues. The author gave some living examples to show the problems in translation process and put forward the methods and strategies to deal with them.The report can be divided into three parts:The first part brief introduces the significant value of English for science and technology in social development and international community, as well as the actual meaning and goal.The second part is the main body of the report, divided into three chapters:Chapter I is the description of translation task, including task background and characteristics of this book. Chapter II describes translation process which includes the preparation before translation, translation procedures and post-translation issues. Preparation contains reading the whole task, translation theory, translation strategies and auxiliary tools. The translation process states in detail the implementation of the translation process. Post-translation issues are modification and correction. Chapter III is the analysis of the case while translation, including the types of problem in translation process, the ways to deal with them in translation strategies and the theory analysis.The last part is an application and conclusion over the whole report. Since there are lots of specific terms and polysemy, EST has always been the difficulty of translation. For these reasons, there are less EST translating versions than other styles in our country. By translating This Explains Everything, the translator not only broadens our horizons, but also improves the level of translation. The translator hopes to offer readers who have the same problems in this kind of works some suggestions through translating this task and the analysis on typical examples.
