To most people, the films of Andrei Tarkovsky are nearly impossible to be understood.Because of that, his films have always been excluded from the mainstream of the filmindustry. The way to explore his works certainly differs the majorities since his film languageis highly personalized. Tarkovsky believes that film is part of his life by which he could drawa whole picture of human beings. His films are a mixture of truth and dreams, reality andunreality, repeating in different scenes. This unique film style truly inspires the audiences.And these fantastic scenes, along with the religious temperament, seem to be an amazingstarting point of this dissertation. By analyzing the film language that Tarkovsky uses toexplore the life essence and human spiritual world, the author concludes that his poetry buildsupon the concepts of existence. The inspiration from Tarkovsky’s thoughts of human beingscould lead one to take seriously about the circumstance where his film value emerges, to bespecific, the traditional Russian culture and religion. His works are absolutely marked bywhere he is from.By doing the analysis of Tarkovsky’s film language and religious symbols, espicially thevery last two works “Nostalghia” and “Offret”, the priority gives to the religious features inall Tarkovsky’s eight films. Based on that, the dissertation consists of three parts. The firstpart briefly overview the religious features appeared in his films, the second tries to describand explain these features deeply and the following part helps to conclude the religioustemperament.
