The Influence Factors Of Concreteness Effect Of Chinese Two-character Words Research

The present study examined the influence factors of concreteness effects processingusing event-related potential (ERP) measurements and we used Chinese two-character wordsas experimental materials during a lexical decision task. The study involved two parts: therelationship between word concreteness and word property; the relationship between wordconcreteness and word frequency.The first part examined the relationship between word concreteness and word property(noun and verb) during a lexical decision task. The results showed that noun words werediscriminated from verb words from150ms to570ms. Concrete words and abstract wordswere discriminated from280ms to570ms. Furthermore, there is no significant interactionbetween word concreteness and word property.The second part examined the relationship between word concreteness and wordfrequency (high frequency and low frequency) during a lexical decision task. The resultsshowed that noun words were discriminated from verb words from150ms to570ms. Concretewords and abstract words were discriminated from280ms to570ms. Furthermore, there issignificant interaction between word concreteness and word frequency.Basing on the study result, some inclusions could be come to:(1) Chinese two-character word property and concreteness might be two independentfactors in single context. In other words, word property did not affect the processing ofconcreteness effect.(2) Chinese two-character word frequency and concreteness might be two related factorsin single context. In other words, word property affected the processing of concretenesseffect.(3)The effect of Chinese two-character word concreteness only can be seen inlow-frequency words in single context.(4) The effect of Chinese two-character word concreteness processing didn’t support thedual-coding theory. That is to say, we didn’t support multiple semantic-systems view.
