The Influence Of Mind-shifting On The Effect Of Word Frequency And Word Length In Chinese Reading

Vocabulary recognition is the basis of reading,and word frequency and word length are important factors affecting vocabulary recognition.In both alphabetic and Chinese reading,researchers have found significant word frequency effects and word length effects.Mind-wandering is an important factor that affects reading.What changes in the word frequency effect and word length effect in the state of mind-wandering? Foreign scholars have preliminary explored the effect of mind-wandering on word frequency effect in the reading of alphabetic text,but there is also a lack of research the word length effect in a state of mind-wandering.Compared with alphabetic text,Chinese has its own uniqueness.,and vocabulary length is also an important visual feature of vocabulary.This study uses eye tracking technology.Through two experiments,it aims to explore the characteristics of the word frequency effect and word length effect of Chinese reading in a state of mind-wandering,and to reveal the law of eye movement in mindlessness reading.Study 1 selected 32 college students,manipulated the word frequency of the target word in the sentence reading,and using probe capture to distinguish between mind-wandering and concentration,using 2(word frequency: high-frequency words,low-frequency words)* 2(reading state: mind-wandering,concentration)Two-factor in-experiment design,with eye movement index as the dependent variable,in order to investigate the effect of mind-wandering on word frequency effect and eye movement behavior in Chinese reading.The results of this study found that the word frequency effect disappeared during fixation time(first fixation time,gaze time,total fixation time,and regression path reading time)when mind wandering,but there was word frequency effect in skip reading.Mind-wandering affects eye movements in Chinese reading.When mind wandering,total reading time increases,average fixation time increases,the number of fixations increases,the number of blinks increases,and the total fixation time on target words becomes longer.Study 2 selected 41 college students,manipulated the word length of the target word in the sentence reading,and using probe capture to distinguish between mind-wandering and concentration,using 2(word length: two-word,three-word)* 2(reading state: mind-wandering,concentration)two factors in-experiment design,with eye movement index as the dependent variable,in order to investigate the effect of mind-wandering on word length effect and eye movement behavior in Chinese reading.The results of this study found that there is word length effect on gaze time and skip rate when mind wandering.Mind-wandering affects eye movements in Chinese reading.When mind wandering,total reading time increases,the number of fixationsincreases,the number of blinks increases,and the total fixation time on target words becomes longer.The conclusions are as follows:(1)In Chinese reading,mind-wandering affects the processing of word frequency information in vocabulary recognition.(2)In Chinese reading,mind-wandering does not affect the processing of word length information in vocabulary recognition.(3)Attention can affect the eye movement behavior in Chinese reading.When mind wandering,the reading speed becomes slower,the number of fixations increases,and the input of external visual information is affected.
