The English version of LangTuteng translated by Howard Goldblatt is very successful achievement inthe area of translation literature. This is a great event for the translation of Chinese contemporary novel. Asa result, translation strategies employed in Wolf Totem draw extensive studies in academic circle. On the basis of Christiane Nord’s translation thoughts and theory, this thesis studies the translation ofLang Tuteng from both macro and micro aspects. Different from previous studies mostly based on skopostheory, this thesis employs Nord’s literary communication model in translation. Within this model, literarytranslation is regarded as a cross-culture communication. There are many actional aspects andcommunication relations in the process of translating. All the relations are connected by successfultranslation; therefore translator needs to draw on appropriate translation strategies to realize thecross-cultural communication. From the macro perspective, this thesis analyzes the four major actional aspects involved in thetranslating of Lang Tuteng: sender, receivers, writing and translation intention and text function; the fourcommunication relationships: original author’s intention and translator’s explanation, source text and targetreceivers, the world in source novel and the real world in target text, target text and target receivers. Fromthe micro perspective, this thesis analyzes Goldblatt’s translation strategies with examples and the reasonsinfluencing his choices corresponding to the four actional aspects and the four communicationrelationships. This study illustrates that literary translation can be influenced by many factors. Goldblatt’s translationtransfers the main information of the source text to target receivers by taking appropriate translationstrategies. However, if faithful translation has conflicts with translation intention, Goldblatt will considermore about target receivers’ reading expectation and their cultural background.
