Abstract/Summary:
In 1969,Julia Kristeva,a French Post-Structuralism critic, firstly proposed the Intertextuality Theory.According to the Intertextuality Theory, every text is related to other texts and produces intertextual reference, instead of being isolated and enclosed, which fundamentally shakes the idea that the text is self-sufficient,puts the text into the cultural context and further uncovers the new chapter of the research of context and culture as well. This thesis mainly focuses on the research of the English translation of Lang Tuteng from the perspective of Intertextuality Theory. The best-selling novel--Lang Tuteng, the masterpiece of the very famous writer--Jiang Rong, has been published into seven foreign versions: English,French,Japanese,Italian and so on.It was commented as the only epic which describes and studies the wolves in Mongolian grassland. The author,by using straightforward words and exquisite writing style, depicted the protagonist--Chen Zhen and his friends from Beijing integrated with herdsmen in Mongolian grassland because of the wolves, however, they could not prevent people at that time from destroying the grassland ecology. The whole novel expresses well the author’s feelings not only by using delicate and marvelous words but also quoting many classics,so it is embedded with strong, intense intertextual signs and full of intertextuality. Therefore,in order to promote the spreading of Chinese culture better,it is necessary to cope with the intertextuality in translation and overcome the obstacle of communication in the languages of both Chinese and English.Lang Tuteng was translated into English by the celebrated sinologist Howard Goldblatt in 2008.This version attracts much attention once it is published, and many scholars do researches on it.Among these researches, however, very few have the researches conducted from the perspective of Intertextuality by utilizing the combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis methods. This thesis, with the guidance of Intertextuality Theory, mainly analyzes the translation strategies and handling methods to intertextual signs adopted by the translator. This thesis mainly adopts two kinds of research methods.Firstly, based on two perspectives--Manifesto Intertextuality and Constituent Intertextuality, the author puts the Intertextuality Theory into researching the translation strategies in the English version of Lang Tuteng.Secondly, the author, with the help of statistical graphs, charts and Antconc3.4.3 and Hyconc V3.98 by adopting the methods of quality and quantity, analyzes systematically the relevant data and presents the ways dealing with intertextual signs in the process of translating Lang Tuteng. The thesis consists of five parts. The introduction includes research background, research significance, research questions and the organization of the thesis. The first chapter is literature review which mainly exemplifies the novel--Lang Tuteng and its English version. The second chapter outlines a theoretical framework of this thesis, explicitly introducing the Intertextuality Theory and systematically exemplifying the use of Intertextuality Theory in translation. The third chapter mainly gives a thorough introduction to Lang Tuteng and its author--Jiang Rong, and the English version--Wolf Totem and its translator--Howard Goldblatt. The fourth chapter is the core of this thesis. This chapter, based on the two perspectives of Manifesto Intertextuality and Constituent Intertextuality, mainly analyzes explicitly the intertextual signs by adopting the methods of qualitative and quantitative researches, concluding the translation strategies.Besides, with the aid of statistical charts, graphs and the text analysis software--Anyconc3.4.3 and Hyconc V3.98,this thesis researches the main translation strategies in Lang Tuteng from the perspective of Intertextuality Theory. The last part is the end of this thesis. The author is of opinion that the Intertextuality Theory as the significant translation theory can be as an epistemology,as well as a methodology to guide the translation practice in the process of cultural communication and spreading. The reasons that the English version of Lang Tuteng translated by Howard Goldbaltt is very popular among readers not only lies in solid mastering of Chinese and English of the translator, but also attributes to the deep understanding of the translator to Chinese culture,so that the translator can better tackle properly the intertextual signs, making the English version more clear and fluent. But the English version also has some defects for the translator over pursues the simplicity and the cramped construction of the English version. For example, compared with the original text, the English version is deleted by one third, including all the classics mainly about introducing the wolves as well as the complex and abstract contents in the middle and at the end of the novel. Therefore, the author holds that there are still some flaws in the English translation by Howard Goldblatt although his translation is comparatively popular. It is still worth further studying.
