This paper set the Hungarian composer Gyorgy Ligeti’s the second string quartetas the object of study, the specific content involves the background introduction of thework, composing techniques analysis and literature research.In the latest edition of The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, theLigeti’s composition can be divided into three periods: the first is years in Hungary(early works); the second is from1956to the opera Le Grand Macabre (mid-termworks); the third is after the Opera Le Grand Macabre (late works). This paper chosethe second string quartet as the object of research, mainly because of the work wascomposed in the period from1956to the opera Le Grand Macabre. This period is themid-term of Ligety’s composing, and this work can fully reflect the composer’scharacteristics of his thought of composing, his composing techniques and otherrespects, and the work contrasts starkly to his early works in style. Therefore, this paperwill take the Ligeti’s composing technique analysis as the starting point, carries on thecareful analysis to the works of composing parameters, in order to reveal thecomposer’s characteristic and refine the general rule of composing.According to the analysis and research above, this paper is divided into six parts:The first part is the introduction. The content includes: the academic backgroundand its significance of the theory and practice; The literature review at home and abroad;The present research situation of the Ligety and his composing at home and abroad,progress and achievements and problems to be studied further; Methods and objectiveof the study; Innovation of the selected subject; source of the subject and path of theresearch.The second part is the introduction of the secnd string quartet’s composingbackground.The third and the fourth part is the focus of this paper. The first is on thecomposition technique analysis of the second string quartet, mainly about the analysisof the micro polyphony and two important aspects: timbre processing and layout ofsound; The second is a summary of the composing technique of the second stringquartets.The fifth part shows the enlightenment that the composition thinking, composingtechniques and the music style brings, based on the analysis of the second stringquartet.The sixth part, namely a conclusion, makes a general summary of the full paper. It includes the creative achievements and its theoretical and practical significance throughthe study of the second string quartets.
