My paper deals with the first and second String Quartet of the Hungarian composer Gyorgy Ligeti..Its details involve an introduction of their backgrounds, analysis of the composing techniques and a comparison. Each of the two works respectively embodies the composer's music thoughts, composing techniques and styles in the early and middle stage of his music-making career, which is the reason why I choose them. My paper will provide a complete interpretation by starting from one point to the whole work.According to its object of study, my paper consists of three parts:Part I is the introduction of the backgrounds of the two string quartets and the inner link between the music background of the 20th century and Ligeti's vocabulary.Part II ,the key part of my paper, is the analysis of the two quartets. It includes: the thematic motive of quartet No.1, the application of thematic transformation, a general description of the overall techniques and treatment and deployment of "timbre-acoustics" in quartet No.2.Part III makes a comparison between the thoughts, techniques and styles of the two works in terms of the data obtained above and attempts to explore the reason of the revolution of Ligeti's music vocabulary.Besides a conclusion, the last part also discuss the values and the significance of the two works.
