The rusticated youth art is not only a impotent part of the Down to the Countryside Movement, it also plays a significant role in the art history of the People’s Republic China At the present day, however, the study of rusticated youth art is still in its initial stage and the number of related research papers are very few. The fundamental concepts of it can be characterized by ambiguity. As a consequence, we try to restudy the this topic with a tentative approach.To begin with, we argue that the identity and experience are key words of this research topic, which give educated youth the intellectual impetus of artistic creation and exert a profound impact on the development of rusticated youth art. On this basis, we newly definite the concept and the historical stages of rusticated youth art. Then put forward the concept of "Post Rusticated Youth Art", which refers to the art works that named after the "Scar Art" and "Local Realism".And then we discuss the contemporary rusticated youth art with one chapter. Finally, we try to put forward the historical significance and creative dilemma of rusticated youth art.In this paper, we believe that there are broad and narrow senses in the definition of the rusticated youth art. Generally, rusticated youth art refers to the works of sent-down youth who went to the countryside and had sent-down experiences.That is to say, the broad rusticated youth art includes the art works that created before the Cultural Revolution. And at the same time,it also contains the artistic creation that emerges at the present. Specifically, In the subject, it should be related to the life of sent-down youth, and the identity of authors is indefinite. It means that in addition to the sent-down youth, the creators may be the artists who do not have the experience of down to countryside,such as the professional painters of older generation, dilettantes and common masses.By contrast,the narrow definition refers to the the works that created by the sent-down youths during the period from the start of he Cultural Revolution to today. In a words, it can be said that the sent-down youths present themselves through theirs art works. That is, there are two meaning we should pay emphasis on in the narrow definition:firstly, the identity of painter should be the rusticated youth; secondly, the art works present the experience of rusticated people. Obviously, taking into account the identity and experience the narrow sense rusticated youth art should regard as the focus of the study.In short, the rusticated youth art is an important artistic phenomenon. There is a definite link between the identity of sent-down youth and the artistic creation. We can not talk about the rusticated youth art without considering the importance of sent-down youths’experience. But at the same time, it is evident that the identity of the rusticated youth has dual political and cultural connotation. That is,they are not only Red Guards,citizens,but also sent-down youths, peasants, who are Red Guards and sent-down youth,citizens and peasants. In a word, the identity and experience of sent-down people is the stimulation of artistic creation, but at the same time,it restricts the further development of sent-down youth art and ends its history of creation.
