Zhan Jingfeng was a professional connoisseur and collector in the Jiajingand Wanli Emperor of the Ming Dynasty. He was active in the realm ofappreciation with the advent of the Post-Zhengming Wen’s era. At thattime,collection of paintings was popular in Huizhou Region, alongside, largenumbers of paintings and calligraphies as the subsituting payment in theChinese imperial court flooded into the society. In that sense, the socialacticvities of Zhan Jingfeng together with his peers have contributed tomapping the general picture regarding the inner circle of art connoisseurs in aspecific time of Ming Dynasty.In addition to that, Zhan Jingfeng aimed to build up a new framework of thetheories of painting, which performed a significant role to Mo Shilong andDong Qichang in terms of their theoretical works. Both the idea of “Threechanges”, and the principle, highly respecting the style of Song Dynasty butdegrading the stlye of Yuan Dynasty, however, stemmed from theconnoisseurship that reflected the personal preference of Zhan.Therefore, the current research starts with Zhan’s life and career, sketchingthe background of his own trajectory. After that, it will move forward to ananalysis of his social networking at various levels according to the differentterritories. Finally, on the basis of Zhan’s mechanism, this article offers someinsights on the relationship between the formulation of his art theory andconnoisseurship within the case studies of certain art works.
