The translator chooses the book Tiny Beautiful Things written by Cheryl Strayed as thetranslation material. The book on the whole consists of5parts. And3articles from Part1arepicked as the material to translate and analyze for this thesis. It’s totally about10,000words.Tiny Beautiful Things is the collection of the essays of Dear Sugar on The Rumpus.net byCheryl Strayed. The book is written in epistolary style. Through the words, we can seedifferent lives and feel different emotions. Although the entire story is rooted in Americansociety, in the translator’s opinion, it’s the story or situation that we would face in spite ofnationality or race. Therefore, such translation bears a certain practical significance.The thesis is a translation report based on the translation practice and consists of fourparts: introduction of the translation material and the life of its author, preparation work madefor this translation, translating process and certain strategy used and summary and conclusion.The last part shows what the translator has gained from the practice, especially in the field ofthoughts and experiences.In the part of the introduction, the translator briefly introduces the author CherylStrayed and her book Tiny Beautiful Things. Cheryl Strayed faced many twists and turns inlife and once trapped in the depression. But the experience of going through the Pacific ridgetrail on foot changed her life. Tiny Beautiful Things is the collection of articles when shewrote for a suggestion column. By sharing her own experiences and talking in a friendlymood, she exchanges her ideas with readers on their daily annoyances. Once the book ispublished, it brings about a sensation. At present, there is no translation version in China.Hence, the translation, to some extent, could be taken as a reference to us.In the preparation part, the translator mainly discusses the text type of such material and brings up theories that guide the whole practice. Although it’s written in column, its vividwords extinguished it from news. Finally, the translator classifies it into literary translation.As to the translation theory, the translator mainly cites functional translation theory by EugeneNida. Besides, the three principles brought up by Mr. Fang Mengzhi are also mentioned.The third part focuses on the translation process and the strategy used, which includesthe material analysis, the specific translating strategy, and the proofread. Through carefullyreading of the translation material, the translator has a certain grasp of the characteristic of thewhole passage. In the next step, the translator mainly analyzes three aspects as the strategy,i.e., treatment of long sentences, the change from prepositional phrase to sentence and wordformation. Then, the translator goes over the whole translation to make sure there is nospelling mistake or missed paragraphs. And the polishing of the translation is also necessary.At last, the translator exchanges her gains from the practice with the readers.Through this task, the translator realizes the importance of a qualified translator and getsto the point of the recognition of her shortcomings. The translator will work hard in the future.
