A Report Of Long Sentences In E-C Translation In Emotional Columns

This report is based on Tiny Beautiful Things,which was written by Cheryl Strayed.In this report,the translator introduced and summarized the whole translation process.The book Tiny Beautiful Things,is about letters.Readers wrote letters about love,marriage,sex,work,fashion,reading,loyalty,depression,loneliness and other aspects of life to the writer and the writer replied to them.Men and women of various ages,not only teenagers but also the old wrote letters about their love issues,and Cheryl replied to them in an extraordinary way.We can read about people's hidden emotional life in the book,as well as Cheryl's warm and amazing response.This book also gives us a perspective to look into our own life.Cheryl has been widely recognized by the public with her simple,honest and intelligent language style.The book is composed of five chapters and 56 articles in total.Each article tells one single story.In this report,only 5 pieces are analyzed in detail because of the limited length.After reading through the articles,the translator finds that the original text is easy to understand but hard to translate due to long sentences in the text.So the translator chooses the translation strategies of long sentences as the subject of this report.As for the translation theory,the translator adopts Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory to guide this translation practice.This report puts forward three basic methods for translation of long sentences:following the original syntactic order,reinventing sentence structures and focusing on the meaning rather than form.The first method is applied in long sentences,as long as the English sentence and the Chinese sentence share the same structure and logic.While the last two methods are mainly used in the translation of long difficult sentences.These sentences scare Chinese readers most with their complicated structures.The translator summarizes twomethods to cope with these kinds of translation: reinventing sentence structures and focusing on the meaning rather than form.The former method means adjusting or rearranging the sentence structures to rewrite the original English.The latter method is used when the above-mentioned skills fail to work well owing to the large language structure disparity.In these cases,the translator should mainly focus on the meaning of the sentence,not the structure.
