In the 1980s and 1990s, China was under a period of transformation in terms of society, a period of a significant change of literature and the period of prosperous development of the Essays. The magazine Popular Tribune created by the China Democratic League in 1985 has been continuing the tradition of Chinese literati politics since the May forth Movement. From the founding date on, it has abided by the foreword commitment of " tell the truth, against empty words and big lie ",and it has kept up with the pace of time and given suggestions to China’s democracy and legal system, as well as concerned social and people’s livelihood. Based on the running idea, Popular Tribune opened " Let all people have their say " and " Impressions Record " column, published a number of essays works. These works paid attention to the new social phenomenon, problems and contradictions during the particular period with their own unique attitudes and ways, playing important role towards the process about China’s reform and opening up together with ideological emancipation. Even today, among these opinions still have important reference values and significance. Therefore, the research on the Popular Tribune not only helps us more clearly understand the achievements and experiences of Chinese essays in this period, along with their problems and shortcomings, but also helps us from a particular side, to know and understand the process of emancipation and experience of China’s reform and opening up during 1980s and 1990s.Following the changes and highlighting the characteristics of the times are the salient feature for the essays, especially in the context of Chinese political culture and social culture in the 1980s and 1990s. These essays focused on the two themes:" spiritual civilization" in the 1980s and "market economy construction" in the 1990s. Problems such as culture construction, education development, anti-corruption and democratic molecular got sustained focus and deep thinking, which well reflected Chinese intellectuals’ obligation and responsibility for the nation, the country, the reality, the future. What is noticeable is that the concern and consideration of these essays always changes with the times and continues to further deepen, which shows a strong predictability, thus well plays of essay unique and style characteristics,that is:to be alert, critical and fighting.
