Zhao Yi is a famous writer and historian of Qing dynasty. One of hiswritings,Oubei Poetic Criticism,plays a pivotal role in poetic criticismcreation, which advocates innovative and emotions expression during thereigns of Emperor Qianlong and Emperor Jiaqing. There are twelvevolumes in Oubei Poetic Criticism. The first ten volumes are talkingabout ten poets including Li Bai, Du Fu, Han Yu, Bai Juyi, etc. And thelast two volumes discuss all aspects of ancient poetry. Oubei PoeticCriticism contains many valuable propositions and considered highlyacademic value for its unique style.This paper focuses on the poetry writing in Zhao Yi’s poetic theory.And its main part is composed of four chapters. Chapter one discuss thebackground of Zhao Yi’s poetic theory formation in three aspects,including literature writing during the reigns of Emperor Qianlong andEmperor Jiaqing, Zhao Yi’s life story and his friends. Chapter two isabout Zhao Yi’s identity.Oubei Poetic Criticism is the creation of Zhao Yi,a writer, a historian and a scholar–official at the same time. His tripleidentities have lots of independent but also inter-influencing factors. Itreflects how subjectivity determine creative motive. Chapter threeprovide a discussion about the main connotation of Zhao Yi’s poeticwriting theory through three groups of logical relationship whichincluding inheritance and innovation, emotions and scholarship, grades ofpoetry and character of people. Chapter four is based on the text namedThe Complete Poetry works of Zhao Yi. This part has some comparisonbetween theory and practice. So to construct a system of Zhao Yi’s poeticwriting theory.
