The translation practice of human beings has a history of more than5000years.The translation theories have been developing continuously and the translationpractice covers more and more fields. However, in the translation history, there aretwo fundamental but rival translation methods, i.e. literal translation and freetranslation. The former one maintains the form of the original text, while the latter onelays more emphasis on contents other than forms. This essay endeavored toorganically combine literal translation and free translation, in other words, using thesetwo methods in one sentence in light of the specific situation,expecting that thecomplementary roles of these two methods can be brought into full play. Based on theprinciples of faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance, this essay carried through thetranslation practice on A Ten-Year Backpacker with the combination of literaltranslation and free translation. Through the detailed practice process, this essaypresented the feasibility of the combination of literal translation and free translation.The reason why the book was chosen was that the original text was categorized as thetravel notes whose types and forms of literature was appropriate for the combinationof literal translation and free translation.
