Pragmatic Equivalence In Idiom Translation

Idioms are an essential component of a language and have been approached from various perspectives. From a pragmatic equivalence point of view, this thesis analyzes the idiom translation and accordingly, put forward four strategies for the idiom translation. Pragmatic equivalence is to translate the source text to the greatest extent, taking into full account the differing aspects in terms of pragmalinguistics and sociopragamtics between the source language and the target language.In this thesis, four strategies are brought forward for the idiom translation. The first is the loan strategy which is appropriate for the two idioms having the same figurative meaning. The second strategy is the literal translation by virtue of which the words of the source language are translated in full on the basis of grammatical construction equivalence. The third strategy is the liberal translation which takes full consideration of the target language in terms of grammatical construction and choice of words.
