Half Broke Horses—A True-Life Novel is the debut novel written by Jeannette Walls.This novel is based on the extraordinary life of Jeannette Walls’ maternal grandmother. Throughthe translating of this novel, the author has a deep understanding of the literary translation.Based on the translation of this novel and the research on fiction language features andtranslation methods, this report brings up the translation theory in the translating-FunctionalEquivalence Theory during translating. Under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory,some translation techniques were introduced, including amplification and omission. The authoralso chooses some specific examples to make a thorough research in the above translationtechniques.In the thesis, Chapter One mainly introduces the background of the material, includingthe source of the material, the brief introduction of the author and material. Chapter Twodescribes the process of the translation, including the preparation before translating and theproofreading after the translating. Chapter Three analyses the applied theory. Chapter Fourmainly presents the translation methods which are adopted in translating. Chapter Five is theconclusion of this thesis.
