With the rapid development of the world economy and the great progress of modern technology, human society has consumed a lot of resources in the process of rapid development. The textile and garment industry is the second largest polluting industry in the world, second only to the industry. It was once called “fashion pollution” and “fashion poison”.Every part of the industry is associated with waste of resources, energy consumption and environmental pollution. This article uses an excerpt from Unraveled: The Life and Death of a Garment by Maxine Bedat as the translated text. The book takes a piece of clothing as an example, from fabric production, fabric processing to clothing sales, waste clothing disposal,so that readers can deeply understand the complete life course of our clothing,is a conscious consumer self-education,so that they understand the real humanity of fashion, environmental and economic costs.Unraveled: The Life and Death of a Garment is a scientific text. The book is written in concise language, with some expertise in fields such as agriculture and biology, and abundant in long, complex sentences.Whether the translation quality can be improved and the target readers can obtain the information closest to the original text depends on the accurate understanding of sentences and the accurate grasp of the translation method of long sentences. In order to solve this problem, the translator consulted a large number of relevant literature and found that Nida’s functional equivalence theory emphasizes not only the form, but also the accurate expression of the meaning of the original text, which precisely conforms to the translation standard of long and difficult sentences. In the process of translation practice, the translator mainly adopts Nida’s functional equivalence theory as the guide, and adopts such translation strategies as embedding method, sequence method, division method and reconstruction method, and discusses the application of functional equivalence theory in practice from the perspective of syntactic equivalence. This practice report first introduces the background and significance of the translation practice task by taking the process of translation activities as the main line.Secondly,it introduces the whole process of translation and illustrates the methods and skills used in the process of translation through specific examples. Finally, the translator summarizes the translation practice tasks. At the same time, the translator has gained a lot of experience in translation in this translation practice, which is of great help to the improvement of translation level. It is hoped that this translation practice can inspire daily clothing consumption and provide reference for future translation practice and research of scientific texts.
