Actualization Of Lin Daiyu’s Image With "Ku" In The English Translation Of Hongloumeng From The Perspective Of Image Gestalt

Hongloumeng, a prominent literature masterpiece, is of great value to appreciate and research. The characters described in this novel have different personalities and characteristics, which are charming and attractive. But what attract the readers most are the characters’ images with tears in the Grand View Garden. Among those characters, Lin Daiyu is the most representative one for she cries most and her tears seem never to stop throughout her life. Her tears would never dry as if she were just made up of water. As a result, she has another beautiful yet sad nickname "a beauty with tears". This primary objective of this thesis is to study image-G actualization of Lin Daiyu’s image with "ku" in the English translation of Hongloumeng comprehensively and systematically from the perspective of image-G. And the successful image-G actualization of Lin Daiyu’s image with "ku" plays an important part in the English translation of Hongloumeng.Snell-Hornby puts forward a point of view that translation is an independent science, and he also appreciates the application of integrated approaches such as gestalt-principle in translation, which provides a theoretical basis for the translation study in our country. The literary translation mode based on the image-G actualization could be concluded as two steps. First step, ST comprehension-mental actualization of image-G; Second step, TT recreation-linguistic actualization of image-G. The thesis aims to analyze and study the image-G actualization of Lin Daiyu’s image with "ku" from the processes of mental actualization and linguistic actualization. In the process of translation, the subjectivity of the author plays a great part in the reproduction and transformation of image-G, which is the key point of the translation. The translator’s active operation makes a great contribution to the success of translation.At first, this thesis gives a general introduction to the development and application of image-G in translation, and analyzes related researches on Lin Daiyu’s image with "ku" and its translation in China. Next, it makes a detailed introduction to the theory of image-G actualization in literary translation. Then it analyzes systematically the construction of Lin Daiyu’s image with "ku" and the main causes that lead to such an image. And it gives a detailed analysis of the image-G actualization of Lin Daiyu’s image with "ku" in the English translation of Hongloumeng from the processes of mental actualization and linguistic actualization, during which the realization of "harmony" in the TT should be paid much attention to. At last, this thesis points out the objective and subjective constraints in the process of image-G actualization in literary translation, analyzes the translator’s active operation on the basis of those constraints and studies the translation strategies applied in the image-G actualization of Lin Daiyu’s image with "ku" in the English translation of Hongloumeng.Consequently, the perspective of image-G is particularly instructive and valuable to the success of image-G actualization of Lin Daiyu’s image with "ku" in the English translation of Hongloumeng, under which the readers would get a better understanding and a comprehensive appreciation of Lin Daiyu’s image with "ku".
