Yang Changji’s academic thought originated in Huxiang culture,it had a deepimprint of traditional Neo-Confucianism.When it developed to medium, thequintessence part of western thought since modern times were absorbed. At last, basedon the rational thinking to reality, it presented a specific and detailed content ofacademic thought in education, ethics and philosophy. Through the development ofYang Changji’s academic thought, we could announce the trajectory in thetransformation of Chinese modern academic thought.Yang Changji’s academic thought had experienced different stages: In hisChildhood, he was under the influence of family education and he spent lots of time instudying traditional Neo-Confucianism assiduously, to follow the thoughts of Wangfuzhi, Zen Guofan and other sages,laid the foundation of the traditionalConfucianism theory; In his early youth, he experienced the Sino-Japanese War of1894-1895which made him abandon Neo-Confucianism and turned to searching thetheory of the bourgeois reformists, hoping to change the decline of China throughpolitical reform; In his youth, he studied abroad for decades and actively absorbedvarious bourgeois progressive thinking about Western education, ethics, philosophy,etc. He began to ponder the path of salvation seriously, initially formed its owncharacteristics which had the fusion of Chinese and Western perspectives; In hismiddle age, he engaged in educational work. At the same time, he Continued histheoretical studies. He issued a "to grow large wooden long day" sigh, whichrepresented his academic thought trend to the overall maturity.Yang Changji’s academic thought represented the opinions of the bourgeoisreformists that had a distinct patriotic colors, but also inevitably existed the realisticlimitations. He advocated "education Salvation" theory, regarding education as afundamental way to revitalize nation, he also stressed that saving China shouldthrough education which is relatively modest and slow to achieve the ultimate goal.He systematically introduced the Western bourgeois ethics, intense criticism of thetraditional Chinese " the three cardinal guides" ethic, he believed that many of thetraditional ethical restraint democracy, freedom of the fundamental aspirations and heput up the banner of modern ethics moral progress. Yang Changji upheld thephilosophy of idealism, disagree with materialism.
