Lacquer art has a history of thousands of years in China. The oldest verifiable red lacquer wooden bowls were excavated in Hemudu, Yuyao, in Zhejiang province, dating back to about7,000years ago. Lacquer cultures are rich in their contents and deep in their senses and play a very important role in Chinese art history. Looking back on the development of Chinese lacquer art during the long history of China, we can see the continuous changes of ornament lines, patterns, apparatus shapes, colors and techniques from the changes of dynasty, they become more perfect day by day. The whole process has everything to do with the ups and downs of the national power at that time, the evolvement of the social systems, the changes of politics, economics and living environments, the authorities’ control on the whole lacquer, the craftsmen’own skill level and esthetics accomplishment, the whole awareness of lacquer that the social public had at that time and the applications of lacquer by royalties, nobles and common people in the daily life, weddings and funerals, festival celebrations. As the outstanding representative of the lacquer’s region, Shanxi has a absolute superiority in its geographical and historical conditions. Shanxi has a reputation of being Chinese "historical cultural museum" on the earth whose historical cultures are clear and complete with well-established lacquer art. As one symbol of Chinese traditional regional cultures, the lacquer art of Shanxi is well-known for its unique artistic charm and rich cultural heritage. Cloud lacquer’s history, shapes and patterns, production processes, current development status, the developing tendency in the future, its heritage and protection, innovation and the development, and its embodiment in today’s market and role in lacquer art education and the combination of different lacquer arts in the world should be well enlightened and updated. These are all the issues which need more attention and further exploration by both Shanxi lacquer art industry and contemporary China. In this paper, the author explores the developing routes of Shanxi’s cloud lacquer comprehensively and deeply through reviewing and summarizing the history of lacquer art from all aspects, puts forward to some ideas on the aspect of the innovative designs of products and wishes to combine the traditional manual skills and thoughts and requirements of contemporary people closely, merge the real design with the cloud lacquer art of Xinjiang, Shanxi province and works out the new practical products which not only meet contemporary demand but also remain the traditional superiority in order to promote and inspire the development of cloud lacquer of Xinjiang, Shanxi a bit more as well as China’s lacquer art and contribute a little to the protection of Chinese non-substantial cultural heritage to attract more professionals to care about, participate in, help the protection and development of Jiangzhou, Shanxi province and expand the market of cloud lacquer to enable the cloud lacquer of Xinjiang, Shanxi go into the daily life of people.
