In the process of globalization, interpreting is playing an increasingly significant role inthe international exchanges and cooperation. Western interpreting studies have alreadyformed a theoretical system, which presents its relative nature of maturity by far; while,China·s interpreting studies have been on a static way manipulated by Theory ofInterpretation and Gile·s Modelμ. Therefore, the introduction of Theory of Adaptationopened the pragmatic situation on interpreting studies in China. Verschueren (1999)emphasizes the linguistic choices of language use due to its variability, negotiability andadaptbility in his Theory of Adaptation, in which there are four angles of investigation,including contextual correlates of adaptbility, structural objects of adaptbility, dynamics ofadaptbility and salience of the adaptation processes. And dynamics of adaptbility is the coreamong all.This study is focused on the application of culture-contextual adaptbility which is onlyone aspect out of contextual correlates of adaptability and dynamics of adaptbility in theinterpreting process based on the theory. It is aimed at an analytical discussion on theadaptability and effects of the TL through the pragmatic cognition in three aspects:(1) Thethesis has analyzed the real-time pragmatic degrees of consciousness of the adaptationprocesses through the referential meanings in the physical, social and mental worlds tohighlight the culture-contextual adaptbility, in which the interpreter·s pragmatic cognition andequivalence on the adaptability in the cultural context has been mainly stressed.(2) It hasstudied the interpreter·s pragmatic effects of making choices, adaptation in the process ofcognition and TL output through the referential meanings in the time, spatial, and mentalresponse and the typology of SL to emphasize dynamics of adaptbility, in which theadaptation factors have been summarized, and the negotiability of choice making in theprocess of TL output has been discussed at the same time.(3) This study has established atypical Mode of Cognitive Procedure in Interpreting Processμ based on Theory of Adaptation,and the composition thinking of this newly-born mode about the interpreter·s specificcognitive and productive procedures of the TL has been explained through the informativeinput of the SL, the analysis on the effects of the SL, the negotiability of the cognitivemeanings between the SL and TL, the equivalent adaptability of the TL, the choice makingand output of the TL as well. Meanwhile, the relevant factors that affect the interpreter·sspecific cognitive and productive procedures of the TL have been demonstrated asexplanations and illustrations in the mode.The results of the study showed that the equivalence of TL cultural meanings isdependant on the interpreter, who must take it into consideration to actively cognize the referential meanings in the physical, social and mental worlds together with the degrees ofmental acceptance based on the culture-contextual adaptbility. And it is the interpreter·scognitive degree of consciousness about the SL input that determines the results of thedynamics of adaptability in selecting the output of the TL as pragmatic equivalence. And atypical Mode of Cognitive Procedure in Interpreting Processμ has been constructed based onTheory of Adaptation in the thesis. Hence, this study has showed certain significance andvalue for reference on interpreting practice on the application of culture-contextualadaptability, dynamics of adaptability and the cognitive procedure of interpreting performanceboth from Chinese to English and from English to Chinese.
