This M.A. thesis aims to explore the influence of Tagore’s Stray Birds on Bing Xin’s literary creation from the perspective of intertextuality. Intertextuality is a significant cultural and textual term and simultaneously a theory in post-structuralism and postmodernism. The word "intertextuality" originates from the Latin word "intertexto", which means to intermingle while weaving. This term was first introduced by Julia Kristeva, a member of the Tel Quel school of French theorists, to designate the various relationships that a given text may have with other texts and then developed by Roland Barthes, Genette, Harold Bloom, etc. So far, though much research has been done on Bing Xin and Tagore, few systematic research have been paid attention to Tagore’s influence on Bing Xin’s literary creation in certain specific aspects and its major reason, let alone from the perspective of intertextuality. Therefore, it is highly feasible to analyze the influence of Tagore’s Stray Birds on Bing Xin’s literary creation from the perspective of intertextuality. This thesis attempts to analyze the intertextuality with Stray Birds, A Maze of Stars and Spring Water as the entry points.Bing Xin is a Chinese female writer with a long standing reputation in20th century. After "Tagore hot", he was translated into China. Many works of Tagore, especially Stray Birds, exerts crucial impact on Bing Xin. Bing Xin’s untitled free verse, with its elegant and beautiful language, concise form and graceful image, has raised enormous sensation and extraordinary influence. Then, A Maze of Stars and Spring Water has been published and called "Chun Shui Style". This thesis pays much attention to the intertextuality in Tagore’s Stray Birds and A Maze of Stars and Spring Water, as well as the analysis of the reason why Stray Birds has great influence on Bing Xin’s literary creation from the intrinsic and extrinsic factors.
