A Translation Report Of The Instruction Manual Of MSND Pump Made By Nuovo Pignone Company

As technical texts, machinery instruction manuals play an important role in economic activities and people’s daily life. They provide the most essential information for people to properly install, operate and maintain machinery products. With rapid development of science and technology, many Chinese enterprises often import core units or equipment from abroad to increase productivity. In the field of technology, whether these product manuals can be successfully translated or not matters a lot to users and customers. In view of this and out of my personal interest in EST translation, it is of practical significance that I select machinery instruction manual as my translation task and research object in this paper.This thesis is a translation report of the translation practice of English instruction manual about MSND Pump imported from GM-Nuovo Pignone Company in Italy. It mainly consists of four chapters. Chapter One introduces the background, theoretic guidance and significance of the translation program. Linguistic and structural features of English machinery instruction manuals are illustrated in Chapter Two. In Chapter Three, important points and difficulties involving in the process of translation are explained, including the translation of machinery terminologies, passive voices, imperative sentences and mechanical charts, as well as methods and skills applied to solve the problems. Under the guidance of Newmark’s communicative translation theory, and faithful and fluent principle, several translation methods are adopted, such as literal translation, free translation, amplification, omission, division, combination, etc. Finally, unresolved problems and relevant considerations to the translation practice are summarized in Chapter Four.This translation practice provides me first-hand material for the comparison of vocabulary, syntax and discourse similarities and differences between English and Chinese technical texts, and helps me to facilitate a better understanding of English machinery instruction manuals and related strategies of EST translation, which lays a solid foundation for my future career on technical translation. The translated MSND Pump instruction manual, which provides reference for technicians in domestic oil company, will prove to be of great practical value. It also provides reference for translators working on similar English machinery instruction manuals.
