A Practice Report On C-E Translation Of Construction Machinery Operation Manual

Nowadays,exchanges in the construction machinery field are increasingly extensive around the world.China's construction machinery products are exported to overseas countries,and construction machinery manuals in Chinese language need to be translated into English versions,so the study on how to effectively translate the manual is of great significance.Based on the C-E translation practice of a construction machinery operation manual for a forklift's hydraulic system,the report analyses the major problems the author has repeatedly encountered during the translation,including problems in terminology translation such as misuse as common words,failure to use accepted terms,improper literal translation and mistranslation of rare terms;problems in non-subject sentence translation such as overuse of imperative sentences and misuse of modal verbs;problems in long sentence translation such as run-on sentences and failure to convey logical relations.According to Peter Newmark's text typology theory,the operation manual is designated a mixed text of being informative and vocative,and the communicative effect should be achieved as much as possible.Correspondingly,communicative translation should be applied to translate the operation manual.Therefore,three major translation methods of free translation,adaptation and interpretation can be adopted to solve the above-mentioned problems.This report is expected to provide feasible translation methods for translators working in the construction machinery field.
